Rift Rivals is an international tournament involving a number of different rival regions competing against each other.
Over the course of the last few days there have been five events involving 14 different League of Legends esports regions.
It was NA vs EU, SEA vs JP vs OCE, BR vs LAN vs LAS, VN vs CIS vs TR, and KR vs CN vs TW/HK/MO.
Europe lifts the trophy as they prove they are currently a better region than North America
We're going to focus on North America versus Europe, which has historically seen the fiercest rivalries. Last year, NA won, but in 2018, it was the Europeans who got the revenge victory.
In the group stage, each EU team played each NA team once in a best of one format. The finals were then a relay race. Each team plays at least once in a best of five, and for the first three games the better performing region was able to counter pick. For the last two games, the teams are picked at the same time.
After the group stage, the EU LCS teams just about came out on top with an overall record of 5-4. G2 Esports went undefeated against Team Liquid, Echo Fox, and 100 Thieves.
Fnatic went 2-1, however Splyce had a disastrous time, losing all of their games against the Americans.
The full European team at Rift Rivals 2018 consisted of G2 Esports, Fnatic, and Splyce
NA wasn't able to capitalise though, ending the day on 4-5 overall, with Liquid the only positive team on 2-1, while the others ended on 1-2.
In the finals, it looked like history was about to repeat itself after Echo Fox took the first game against G2 Esports, giving the NA LCS a one game lead in the best of five series.
However, Fnatic pulled it back level against 100 Thieves.
It would then by Splyce, the EU's third seed who were so far without a win, against the NA LCS champions, Team Liquid. It was a surprise to everyone when Splyce actually took the game, giving Europe a 2-1 advantage.
It was then up to Echo Fox to keep NA in the match, and they would be up against Fnatic.
The legendary European esports organisation, who went 14-5 in the EU LCS Spring Split, ended up being too strong for Echo Fox, which meant Europe will be coming home from Rift Rivals with a 3-1 final victory over North America.
Fnatic were able to seal the victory against Echo Fox in the final game of the best of five finals
So, the title of best western region goes to Europe for now, but will it all change when Rift Rivals comes around again next year?
You can find full results and VODs of each match on the LoL Esports website.
After a short break for the tournament, the League of Legends Championship Series will kick back off again next weekend.
